Some Final Pages

HOW TO MAKE A PICTURE BOOK

For I’M FAST!, I had the idea that a hot-shot little race car would challenge a freight train to a race. The race would be from Sacramento to Chicago, an actual freight route. The race car would never speak, only rrrrrrrrruuuummm, but the train would understand what he’s saying.

I began writing in late fall of 2009, and finished the first draft in early January, 2010. It was about 500 words. The final draft, finished in May, 2010, came in at a slim 330.

This is the first-draft text for the first spread: And this is the text in the final draft.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrum!

Say what? YOU’re the fastest thing on wheels?
I got wheels. Steel wheels.

            Rrrrrrrrrrrrrum!

You wanna race ME to Chicago?

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrum!
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrum!

Aw right  – but lemme make it more of a contest.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrum!

Say what? You wanna have a race?

Rrrrrrrrrrrr-rum!

First one to Chicago wins?
You’re on, Red.
Lemme load my FREIGHT.
